LEISURE

Beaches

All along the Silver Coast you will find beautiful beaches, some of the more popular ones are: San Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Baleal, Foz do Arelho, Praia Areia Branca, Santa Cruz, plus many quieter locations.

SIGHTSEEING

Pictured above is Fatima which is a religous site drawing crowds from not only all over Portugal, but throughout the world as well.  Tomar, with it's wonderful castle, home of the Knight's Templar is well worth a visit.  Other places within easy reach are Alcobaca, Batalha and Obidos, amongst many others.

SPORTS

Because of Portugal's great climate, who can deny the inhabitants of enjoying themselves in the sun.  No matter what your passion is for sport, you will find it nearby. The golf courses of Bom Sucesso, Campo Real, Praia d'el Rey and Royal Obidos are all within easy reach, but by travelling further, you can visit one of the numerous courses in Lisbon and the surrounding areas.  Water sports are very popular along the Silver Coast, particularly surfing and you will find many surf schools along the coastline.  Another water sport growing in popularity here is paddleboarding, again there are many schools where you can try your skills.  Paragliding is also a popular sport and some beautiful views can be obtained from way up high.  A bit closer to the ground, there is horse riding, cycling and B.M.X. all these have clubs, where you can join in with the activities.  If speed is your thing, how about karting, the closest track is at nearby Bombarral, slightly further away there are tracks at Lourinha and Batalha.  Most towns have tennis courts, if this is your fancy, Caldas da Rainha has ten pin bowling on offer.  One of the Portugese's big loves is shooting, and there is a lot of open countryside close by to participate.  The favourite sport of virtually every person in Portugal is football, in Lisbon, there is the famous "Sporting" and "Benfica", although there are many smaller clubs closer to here.

CUISINE

Despite being bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Portuguese cuisine also has a lot of Mediterranean influences.  This is particually the case in spices, which include piri piri (small, fiery chilli peppers) and black pepper, as well as cinnamon, vanilla and saffron. Olive oil is one of the bases of Portuguese cuisine both for cooking and flavouring meals.

Portugal is a great fishing nation, so fish and shellfish alike, make up a large part of the normal diet, this includes cod, sardines, octopus, squid, crabs, lobsters, prawns and clams.

All types of meat can be found here, but pork and chicken being the most popular.

Whatever your taste in food, the weather and outdoor life style, lends itself perfectly for healthy barbeque cooking.

Portugal is world famous for producing port wine, although there are a lot of very good wines made throughout the country.  This is a wine growing region and many excellent wines are produced locally.

Because the Silver Coast is not so commerialised as the Algarve region of Portugal, to eat and drink out in the many bars and restaurants still remains cheap.
